Official rulings

The amount of damage and which hull zones suffered that damage from the critical effect of Superheavy Composite Beam Turbolaser does not interact with the effect of XI7 Turbolasers.

The redirect defense token effect is resolved after damage is totaled from resolving the critical effect of Superheavy Composite Beam Turbolaser.

How does XI7 Turbolasers and Superheavy Composite Beam Turbolasers interact?

The answer depends on if the defender has resolved the “Redirect” defense token or not.

If the defender does not resolve the “Redirect” defense token, they can suffer the damage, 1 at a time, on any hull zone they choose (each time for each damage). Then they suffer damage from the attack pool on the defending zone.

If the defender chooses to resolve the “Redirect” defense token, as we know, damage can only ever be suffered 1 damage at a time. With Superheavy Composite Beam Turbolasers, the critical damage is being suffered 1 at a time, but it is the defender’s choice of where that damage is suffered for each point on a selected hull zone.

Only 1 damage can be suffered on each hull zone that is not the defending hull zone. The defender must then suffer the rest of the damage on the defending hull zone.

For example, let’s say the defender must suffer 4 damage from Superheavy Composite Beam Turbolasers, and the defending hull zone is the front hull zone.

The defender spends a “Redirect” token and chooses to suffer 1 damage from Superheavy Composite Beam Turbolasers on the rear, left, and right hull zones. The remaining 1 damage from the Superheavy Composite Beam Turbolasers must be suffered on the defending hull zone. Then the defender must suffer the rest of the damage from the attack pool on the defending zone, but they are unable to redirect any damage away from that zone as the defender cannot choose to suffer damage on any other hull zone since each has already suffered 1 damage.

During the “Resolve Damage” step, if a red critical icon is showing in the attack pool, and before damage is suffered, Superheavy Composite Beam Turbolasers may be resolved for its effect. This effect causes the defender to suffer 1 damage for each red or blue critical icon in the attack pool.

This damage inflicted by this card is NOT an attack, it is a card effect. This damage CANNOT be reduced or canceled by defense tokens, nor any card effects that involve moving or reducing damage can be utilized (unless they are effects not used in the term “attack” or otherwise stated).

If this damage is directed on a ship, this damage is suffered on one chosen hull zone chosen by the defender similar to the Debris Obstacle. In this instance, the damage could be spread across multiple hull zones as the critical damage is suffered 1 damage at a time.

Superheavy Composite Beam Turbolasers cannot be resolved if the ship it is equipped too has the faceup damage card Targeter Disruption.

A defending ship that spends a contain defense token and also has Damage Control Officer equipped (and not discarded) will prevent any critical effects from resolving.

A defending ship that has Commander Gherant equipped (and not discarded), the attacker cannot resolve any critical effects.

How does XI7 and Superheavy Composite Beam Turbolasers interact?
As we know, damage can only ever be suffered 1 damage at a time.
With SCBT, the crit damage is being “suffered” ONE at a time, but it is the defenders choice of where that damage is suffered for reach on a selected hull zone.

Per the ruling based on the Xi7 and AP interaction, once 1 damage is “suffered” on any hull zone that is NOT the “defending” hull zone. The Defender must suffer the rest of the damage on the “defending” hull zone. They are not allowed to choose any other hull zone to suffer damage.

Following this precedent, once the defender has suffered “1” damage from SCBT on the “rear” hull zone, lets say. The remaining 2 damage from the SCBT MUST be “suffered” (one at a time) on the “defending” hull zone. As the defender cannot CHOOSE to “suffer” damage on any other hullzone that is NOT the defending hull zone.

So in a nutshell, if you, as the defender, resolve the redirect defense token. You can only “suffer” 1 damage on any other hull zone period.
The rest must be suffered on the “defending” hull zone. Meaning 1 crit damage else where, the remaining 2 crit damage on the “defending” zone, then its followed by 3 “damage” from the attack pool on the “defending” zone.

If you, as the defender, do NOT resolve the redirect defense token. You can suffer the 3 crit damage, 1 at a time, on any hull zone you choose. And then 3 damage from the attack pool on the defending zone
