Timing

This Upgrade Card may be exhausted during the “Determine Course” step to resolve its ability.

Official rulings

If a ship is within distance 1-2 of a Gravity Rift obstacle and distance 1-5 of an enemy ship with G-8 Experimental Projector and both effects are resolved, both effects would be applied together to temporarily reduce that ship’s speed by two.

G-8 Experimental Projector wouldn’t prevent Moff Jerjerrod’s effect from resolving, and a ship’s yaw clicks would be increased even at the temporary speed.

When a ship’s speed is temporarily reduced, that ship’s speed dial is not changed. When this effect is resolved on an enemy ship and that ship changes its speed dial during the Determine Course step (such as with a Navigate command), the ship’s speed is temporarily reduced by 1 from the current speed on its dial. This includes a ship that increases its speed to the maximum speed on its speed chart.

This effect can be resolved on an enemy ship that is executing a maneuver from an effect such as Engine Techs. This effect is resolved before the Determine Course step of that maneuver and reduces the ship’s temporary speed by 1 to a minimum of 0.

Community rulings

Before an opponent’s “Determine Course” step for a ship, if it is at distance 1-5 of the ship equipped with G-8 Experimental Projector, you may exhaust this card to temporarily reduce that ships speed by 1 to a minimum of 0. This temporary reduction does not physically change the speed on the speed dial.

The owner of G-8 Experimental Projector should declare their intentions if they plan to use the card, and exhaust the card to resolve as soon as possible when an opponent’s ship is about to start the “Determine Course” step. This is so the opponent can make an informed decision about that ship’s movement when using the “Maneuver Tool”, as they need to make a legal movement with that ship knowing whether the ship’s speed will be affected or not.

Waiting until an opponent is figuring out a movement, is about to lock in the tool, or has locked in the tool, is a “missed opportunity”.

The maneuver granted by Engine Techs, Quantum Storm, or Admiral Ozzel (Officer) may be affected by G-8 Experimental Projector.

G-8 Experimental Projector does not trigger Thruster Fissure or The Grand Inquisitor as the ship’s speed dial is not changed.

G-8 Experimental Projector does stack with the speed reduction of the Gravity Rift Obstacle.

The special rule maneuver granted by Rift Ambush is able to be affected by G-8 Experimental Projector.

If a ship’s speed is temporarily slowed by an effect such as the G-8 Experimental Projector, you will not be able to use Take Evasive Action!.

For example, a ship’s “current speed” is 3. It is then temporarily slowed to “2”, but this temporary reduction in speed does not change the ship’s speed dial. Since the ship’s “current speed” is 3, but forced to conduct the maneuver at speed 2, Take Evasive Action! cannot modify the yaw value in the speed 2 chart.

In regards to Entrapment Formation!, Engine Techs, and G-8 Experimental Projector:

Can you use Entrapment Formation! Or other ability to change your Engine Techs maneuver speed?

A ship’s speed (on its speed dial), and the speed of a maneuver granted by an ability, are not the same thing.

When a ship uses Entrapment Formation! or a navigation command to increase or decrease speed, that ship’s speed (shown on its speed dial) is changed, not the speed of the maneuver being performed by an ability such as Engine Techs.

Engine Techs is a set temporary “speed 1 maneuver”, regardless of the speed of that ship’s speed dial. When G-8 Experimental Projector are exhausted, they are targeting the speed of the current maneuver, not the ship’s speed dial.
