Community rulings
A ship that equips Vanguard gains the ability to equip a Weapons Team upgrade card, and at the start of the first round, may replace one of its defense tokens with a Redirect defense token. IE removing Evade and replacing it with Redirect.

Even if a card such as Darth Vader (Boarding Team) was to discard Vanguard, the Weapons Team equipped and the Redirect defense token would remain.
