Answer: Dice can only be added during the “Resolve Attack Effects” step of an attack. Which is after dice are rolled.

The die is removed after gathering dice into your attack pool, but before rolling dice.

When this ship is attacking another ship or squadron from a hull zone that is adjacent to the marked Focus token hull zone, remove 1 die after you gather die, but before rolling your initial attack pool.

This includes any attacks made by card effects such as Ordnance Pods if you choose to use its effect on an adjacent hull zone to the marked Focus token hull zone.

If you ready this card, remove the Focus token.

If a ship is equipped with an upgrade card that would increase its battery armament in a hull zone that would grant a colored die not found printed on its ship card, (for example, a Munificent-class Comms Frigate equipped with High-Capacity Ion Turbines) and you place a Focus token on that ships front or rear hull zone, you would be able to choose the colored die granted by that upgrade card as a die to be added in a Focus hull zone attack.

Swivel-Mount Batteries does not add an extra die to a Salvo attack as the attack uses the “printed rear armament.”

However, if the hull zone performing a Salvo attack is adjacent to a hull zone with the Focus token it would lose a die from its attack pool.
