Upgrade Card Collection (SWM38)

Card text

Setup: The first player must deploy all of his ships and squadrons before the second player. After the second player deploys ships and squadrons, the second player must choose 1 of the 3´ edges of the play area to be the corona.

Special Rule: While a ship is attacking, before resolving any attack effects, if any portion of the corona is inside the attacking hull zone’s firing arc, the attacker must discard 1 die with a [accuracy] icon from the attack pool, if able.

Official rulings

Once you reach the “Resolve Attack Effects” step of an attack, if your attack pool consists of a single die and that die is removed due to an effect like Solar Corona, you are still able to resolve modifying dice effects such as adding dice to your attack pool with Linked Turbolaser Towers.

The “Roll Attack Dice” step is resolved before this card’s Special Rule effect is resolved. If there are no dice remaining in the attack pool after resolving this effect, the attacker can still resolve effects that add dice during the “Resolve Attack Effects” step.

The standard obstacles are used during setup, which are 3 asteroid fields, 2 debris fields, and 1 station.

After obstacles have been placed, the first player must now deploy all non set aside ships and squadrons. Then the second player deploys all non set aside ships and squadrons. At the end of the “second players deployment” (it is not “after deployment” which is its own timing window) the second player chooses one of the 3 foot edges (left or right) to be the corona.

The special rule requires that while a ship is attacking (any target), if any part of the attacking hull zones firing arcs are within the coronas 3 foot edge, then the following occurs.
After rolling the ships initial attack pool, and before ANY card effects are resolved. If at least one die is showing an Accuracy icon, then remove one die showing an accuracy icon. This is the only timing that allows the removal of a die. Any accuracy’s rolled during the “resolve attack effects” step are not affected by the Corona.

As another reminder, the special rule resolves before ANY attack effects resolve. For example, if you are attacking using only red dice, and one of the red die was an accuracy, that accuracy would be removed before being able to resolve the card effect of something like Quad Turbolaser Cannons.
In another example, if you are attacking with only one blue die and you have a Concentrate Fire dial read, and that blue die comes up as an accuracy, that die is removed before being able to add a die with the Concentrate Fire dial command. Meaning you would be unable to add a die into the attack pool, as there is no die or color in the attack pool to be chosen to add the additional die.

It is advised to mark the chosen 3 foot edge of the play area that is the Corona with some type of items or tokens to help both players remember the Special Rule.

A ship with Counter would be affected by the Solar Corona. If the Counter hullzone has the Corona inside its firing arcs.

Salvo is affected by the Solar Corona objective special rule. Because firing arcs are ignored only for the purposes of drawing line of sight, not that they do not exist from the attacking hull zone.

In regards to the Onagers ignition attack and Solar Corona:
The special battery armament is associated with the hull zone it resides in. Meaning when checking to see if any portion of the corona is indie the attack hull zones firing arc, you are checking the front hull zone arcs. Not the special firing arc.
