The special rule:
When a squadron with the keyword Bomber or a ship is attacking, during the “Resolve attack effects” step, it may spend 1 die with a hit icon (hit, double hit, or hit/crit) to flip 1 facedown damage card already on a defenders ship, faceup. If there are no damage cards, or all damage cards are already face up. You may not spend a die, as there are no facedown damage cards to flip.
After an attack, if the attacker was a squadron with the keyword Bomber or a ship, the attacker gains 1 victory token worth 15 points for each damage card dealt face up or flipped faceup in that attack.
When a hit icon is spent by the attacker in this way, they are spent specifically to flip a facedown damage card, faceup. They are not spent in conjunction with other card effects. The spending of these hits also takes place before a defenders “Spend Defense Tokens” step. Meaning you could score points before the defender can force you to reroll or cancel any die.

In regards to the attacker picking a “random” facedown damage card on the defending ship. The defender may choose to shuffle the damage cards on the defending ship (but cannot look at them) before the attacker picks a damage card.
