Timing
This Upgrade Card resolves during the “Spend Defense Tokens” step.
Official rulings
“Discarding” a readied defense token is resolving Admonition’s effect. This is not “spending” that token, nor resolving that defense token’s effect. Thus a defense token of the same type that is discarded to resolve Admonition’s effect can be spent to resolve that defense token’s normal effect.

When a defense token is discarded for Admonition affect, it does not resolve that tokens effect on discard.
